Forgot to post yesterday 😠but I realized the topic I wanted to talk about needed some sitting down on a proper keyboard.
What I’ve been keeping busy about outside of work recently was moving away from subscriptions.
Here’s what I’ve cut so far and what I’ve replaced it with:
- Notes/Workspace: Obsidian Sync -> Syncthing across 5 devices that I regularly use
- Music: Spotify -> Jellyfin w/ Feishin (Desktop & Web), Finamp (Android), and Manet (iOS)
- Photos: iCloud - Jellyfin (although I only do photo backups after travelling anyway)
- Git Server: GitHub - Forgejo
- Password manager : Bitwarden - VaultWarden
- Agentic Coding1: Cursor -> OpenCode free tier with DeepSeek v4 Flash when I run out of requests (I very rarely do, and most of the time I just go back to coding by hand)
I used to have my self-hosted stuff on a Raspberry Pi, but putting all of your files in a 32 GB SD card wasn’t really the best idea. It eventually failed and I slipped back to relying on third-party services. I now got tired of paying for it, though, and with some tweaks in my homelab infrastructure, it became easy again to spin up services.
I could more into detail with specific services, but I don’t think I have anything to add except for links to the projects 😂.
*This is post #2 for my first 100 Days To Offload challenge.
I know, this isn’t really self-hosting, but I don’t have the hardware for this ðŸ˜. CA$30/month is a lot, though, and I probably only spent 3 RMB (CA$0.63) in the entirety of June. Pretty proud of that. ↩︎
